New service at Priveo Santé: Allergy screening.

Allergies affect millions of people worldwide, and their symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe reactions. If you think you may be allergic to certain foods, pollens, or other substances, an allergy test can help you understand your condition and take the necessary steps to avoid allergic attacks. In this article, we explain what a blood allergy test is, how it works, and why it may be the ideal choice for identifying your allergies.

What is a blood allergy test?

A blood allergy test measures the presence ofIgE antibodies in your blood, which are produced by your immune system in response to certain allergens. Unlike skin tests, where small amounts of allergen are applied to the skin, a blood test directly analyzes your blood to determine whether you have a sensitization to certain allergens, such as pollens, dust mites, foods or insect bites.

How does an allergy blood test work?

During a consultation with a specialized nurse practitioner or physician, a blood sample will be taken. The private laboratory then analyzes your blood to detect the amount of Specific IgE associated with allergens. Results are given on a scale of 0 à 6where 0 indicates no allergy and 6 indicates a severe reaction.

The advantages of a blood test over a skin test

  • Increased safety Unlike skin tests, there is no risk of immediate reaction.
  • Accuracy of results A blood test may be more accurate in some cases, particularly for people with sensitive skin conditions.
  • No need to stop medication You don’t have to stop taking your antihistamines before taking a blood test, unlike skin tests which require you to stop taking your medication several days before the test.

What is Priveo Santé’s blood allergy testing process?

At Priveo SantéThe blood allergy testing process is quick and easy. You begin with a consultation with a healthcare professional (specialized nurse practitioner or general practitioner) who will assess your symptoms and determine which allergens to test for. A blood sample will then be taken, and the results analyzed in a private laboratory. You will receive your results within 14 working daysOur team will guide you in interpreting the results and taking the appropriate action.

How to interpret the results of your blood allergy test?

Blood test results are expressed in kU/Lranging from 0 (no allergy) to 6 (severe reaction). The higher the number, the more IgE your body produces in response to the allergen tested. Here’s how to understand the results:

  • 0-1 : Low sensitization. No significant allergic reaction.
  • 2-3 : Moderate sensitization. Symptoms may appear in certain situations.
  • 4-6 : High to severe sensitization. You may develop severe allergic symptoms.

What types of allergies can a blood test detect?

Blood tests can help diagnose a wide range of allergies, including :

  • Food allergies For example, allergies to peanuts, seafood or milk.
  • Respiratory allergies Such as those caused by pollens, dust mites or molds.
  • Drug allergies Some people may be sensitive to specific medications.
  • Environmental allergies Linked to substances such as animal hair or chemicals.

When should I consult a healthcare professional for a blood allergy test?

If you suffer from frequent allergy symptoms, such as itching, rashes, eczema, breathing difficulties or digestive symptoms, it may be wise to consult a healthcare professional to discuss the possibility of a blood allergy test.
