About Pap smears

The gynecological smear is a fundamental screening test for women’s health. In our private clinics in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, we offer this essential medical consultation for the early detection of cervical abnormalities. The cervical smear identifies abnormal cells before they become cancerous, offering optimal protection against cervical cancer. Our doctors use the latest techniques to carry out pap smears, guaranteeing reliable results. This preventive approach is part of our commitment to superior gynecological care.

Symptoms requiring a smear test

Cervical smears are usually taken in the absence of symptoms, as part of preventive screening. However, certain signs may require a more urgent consultation. Abnormal bleeding between periods or after intercourse are important indicators. Unusual vaginal discharge, especially if it has a strong odor or abnormal color, also warrants medical attention. Persistent pelvic pain or burning sensations during urination may also warrant a cervico-vaginal smear. It’s important to note that these symptoms don’t necessarily mean the presence of cancer, but they do require appropriate medical evaluation.

Risks associated with smear tests

The gynaecological smear test presents very few risks and is a safe examination. Some mild cramping may occur during or immediately after the smear examination, but this usually disappears quickly. Slight spotting bleeding may occasionally occur in the hours following the smear, particularly in women with a sensitive cervix. This minor bleeding is normal and usually lasts only a few hours. In very rare cases, infection may occur, but our strict hygiene protocols in our private clinics greatly minimize this risk. Rather, the main risk lies in the absence of regular screening, which can delay the detection of precancerous abnormalities.
